The site is powered by WordPress, using the Starkers blank theme by Elliot Stocks. Plugins that are in use on the site are Contact Form 7, the Kaltura All-In-One-Video plugin, Google XML Sitemaps, Peter’s Login Redirect, Add Lightbox and Title working in conjunction with the Fancybox Jquery plugin, and Fluency Admin which allows the user to rebrand the admin and login screens of the website.

First order of business: we’re gonna need authors. In order to keep the design blog interesting, we’re gonna need designers, coders, and just people with an interest in design to write articles for the blog. I can’t do it all, you know. That’s enough business for now. Now to the fun stuff. I thought since today is the launch date for the site, I could give you some details of what went into this accomplishment. First off, here’s a list of the fine open source materials we are using on LightScapeDesigns.com.

The Starkers WordPress Theme by Elliot Jay Stocks is a wonderful way to get all the styles that come with wordpress out of the way before you get started coding your site. Once activated, the Starkers theme removes every bit (and I mean EVERY bit) of styling from your WordPress installation, so you can start from scratch.

The Sliding Boxes and Captions Jquery Plugin by Sam Dunn is pretty outstanding. It is actually in use in two areas of this site. It was used for the portfolio page, but it was also adapted for use in the sharing bar at the bottom of blog posts! Versatility, indeed!

The Animated Collapsing Div Plugin available at Dynamic Drive is in use in several places on this site. It is highly customizable, not to mention extremely useful. It’s a great sort of catch-all solution for animating a div on a click action.

Colorbox by Color Powered is one of my favorite Jquery plugins used on this site. Colorbox is one of the more versatile and easily customizable lightbox-like plugins I have ever used. You can display everything from pictures and pdf files to external websites and inline html. If you are looking for a lightbox-like plugin with a wide variety of uses, I would suggest Colorbox.

There are definately more open source materials and lots more details about the building of this site to come in the next few posts. Hang in there.
